Shadow Minister visits Glasgow’s Helping Heroes to emphasise veterans’ issues
18 June 2023
Dr Sandesh Gulhane MSP, Shadow Minister for Health and Social Care, recently visited Glasgow’s Helping Heroes (GHH), a service for veterans in the city run by SSAFA, the Armed Forces charity and Glasgow City Council.
Dr Gulhane is still a practicing GP alongside his MSP responsibilities, which gives him insight into the NHS and the ways the Armed Forces Covenant is designed to prioritise veterans.
Of the visit, Dr Gulhane said: “Veterans are very important and have made sacrifices for the greater good which is why it is so important they get support when they leave the service, and GHH provides Veterans with holistic support from housing to mental health to benefits which assists in the transition from the Armed Forces to veteran life.”
Rachel Tribble, Operations Manager for GHH, commented: “Although Dr Gulhane was unable to attend our Parliamentary Reception at Holyrood in March, we’re delighted that he made the time to come to see us and discuss the work we do. It’s always a great opportunity when politicians visit our office, and we’re grateful to Dr Gulhane for joining us to share experiences and work towards improving services.
“Dr Gulhane has good insight into the challenges of getting treatment through the NHS and mentioned working with individuals who’ve struggled to get safe and secure housing, and Sally, our Senior Housing Advisor, explained the challenges of veteran priority in housing, which depends on the housing association or council district.”
