Alison and Nick Goveia, completed an epic walking challenge around the capital for SSAFA on Armed Forces Day.
Purley locals Alison and Nick signed up to walk SSAFA’s 13 Bridges Challenge – London’s only Armed Forces Day event on Saturday 26 June, in partnership with Fujitsu, Corps Security and Morgan Sindall Infrastructure.
The event took participants on a 10-mile walk through Greater London, exploring the 13 bridges that connect the city, starting at Tower Bridge and finishing at the Royal Hospital Chelsea.
However, Alison and Nick decided to make the event even more challenging by walking an additional 22 miles to and from the event. The couple walked from their home in Purley to Tower Bridge and then walked back after completing the event at the Royal Hospital Chelsea– a total of distance of 36 miles.
Alison said: “We left our home at 4am to arrive at Tower Bridge for 8am – we worked out that we walked for a total of 14 hours! I think people we met on our challenge thought we were ever so slightly mad to be walking home after the event!”
“I just want to say thanks to everyone for sponsoring us and a big thank you to my Army son for locating us at 06:30am to walk with us for an hour. I clocked up 74,000 steps on the day.”
