CAMHS – Child and Adolescent Mental Health Service

Services that support young people experiencing poor mental health, or difficult feelings or experiences.

What do they do?

A CAMHS Nurse works with under 18-year-olds, who may have different struggles or challenges. Some may already have a diagnosis, or symptoms of a diagnosis and others may not.

A CAMHS Nurse works together with the individual and their families and decides on the best course of treatment going forward.

A CAMHS Nurse will ensure that all information discussed with the child or adolescent is kept confidential unless there is a safeguarding risk, where someone could come into harm, and the CAMHS Nurse will then need to tell someone.

How do they work?

After the team have received a referral from your GP, the CAMHS Team will look over the referral and decide the best route to take.

If it is decided that an assessment is necessary you will be contacted about an assessment, this then provides an opportunity for the CAMHS Nurse to gather more information and decide what support may be needed.

How to contact them?

You can speak with your GP regarding a CAMHS referral.

Useful websites:

Whilst the sites below provide useful information, we can not confirm they will be able to support young people from overseas via text, chat or the phone, as they may not have the correct safeguarding pathways in place.
